  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs (room temperature)
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • For frosting: 2 cups powdered sugar, ½ cup unsalted butter, ¼ cup cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and sugar.
  3. In another bowl, mix melted butter, milk, eggs, and orange zest until smooth.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients; fold gently until just combined. Add chocolate chips.
  5. Fill cupcake liners about two-thirds full and bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool on a wire rack before frosting with the prepared mixture of butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and optional cocoa butter or oil.
